The weather was cool to start, with the temperature in the low 40's
around 8:00 a.m. as we were getting underway. There was hardly any wind and lots of sunshine. It warmed up to about 60 degrees and this had to be as good as it gets. This was as pleasant and as beautiful
a day as I have experienced in a long time.
Of course, you have to dress right for this type of weather. I pity all the people who were sitting at home just wishing that spring and "fishing season" would get here.
We fished for about 3 hours.
We caught several crappie but only had about a dozen keepers. You know the old
story, "you should have been here yesterday."
We decided to head up lake to where the big whites stage before making their spring run. We could have caught 200 if we had wanted to catch that many! The size was good,
with a lot of fish in the two pound range, and active, with all four of us having fish on
our lines at the same time. Not only was the weather fantastic, we had few other fishermen to deal with and the fish were biting. It
just doesn't get any better!
The fish were still biting great but we decided to go back down lake and try the crappie again. Going to same area we fished that morning, we caught about 100 crappie, with a total of 32 keepers,
some up to 13 inches. After cleaning the 32 crappie and about 50 whites, we all talked about what a great day it was.
I can not but help but think about all the people who are missing out as they think you
can't catch fish or enjoy themselves fishing in the winter. It is just not crappie and white bass that bite in the winter. Black bass fishing can be good also.
A few winters ago we had a cove that for all winter we could pull in and catch 30 to 50 blacks every time we fished it.
Just go ahead and stay home in front of your fireplace and
dream about spring and when you can get out and wet your hook. Of course it may be too late,
because we may have already caught them all!
See you at Grand!
